Jeremy Renner was trying to stop a snowplow from slipping and hitting his nephew when the accident occurred that left him in critical condition, according to an incident report from a Nevada sheriff.
The redacted report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, obtained by CNN, said the emergency stop was not engaged, which would have stopped the snow clearing tractor when it began to slide sideways.
“The Pistenbully snow thrower began to slide causing Renner to exit the vehicle without using the emergency brake,” the report said. “Although the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, based on our mechanical inspection, it is believed that the parking brake would prevent the Pistenbully from moving forward. When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.
The report also noted that the brake indicator light was not working and “mechanical problems may have been a factor”, but impairment is not believed to be a factor.
Renner’s cousin was able to take care of him until help arrived on the scene.
The 52-year-old actor was airlifted to a hospital near Reno after a neighbor, who happened to be a doctor, applied a tourniquet to his leg to stop the bleeding.
Renner was transferred to intensive care following surgeries he underwent following the incident.
A haunting 911 call captured the moments after the accident, as Renner can be heard moaning in pain in the background. The neighbor who called emergency services said the Marvel star’s breathing was “shallow” and suggested sending a medical helicopter to the scene.
Last week, the two-time Oscar nominee announced he was home from the hospital and recovering.
The Marvel actor had been hospitalized since Jan. 1 after “experiencing a weather-related accident while plowing snow” and suffering “serious” injuries in Lake Tahoe.
Renner revealed on Saturday that he broke more than 30 bones in his snowplow accident on New Year’s Day.
“Morning workouts, New Year’s resolutions have all changed this particular New Year,” the “Mayor of Kingstown” star wrote in an Instagram post. “Briving from a tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused on reuniting useful love.”
The caption accompanied a photo of the actor, 52, lying in a hospital bed at his home as a medical specialist stretched his leg.
“I want to thank EVERYONE for their messages and attentions to my family and me,” he continued in the post, which quickly racked up a million likes. “Much love and appreciation to all of you. These 30+ broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just as the love and bond with family and friends deepens.”
“Love and blessings to you all,” he concluded, along with a series of emojis featuring hearts and praying hands.
