The Detroit Lions are bringing back their 2022 kicker, Michael Badgley.
According to a report from his agent, kicker Michael Badgley draws again with the Detroit Lions, terms were not disclosed at this time.
During two years of general manager Brad Holmes/coach Dan Campbell’s regime, the Lions have been looking for a reliable kicker after opting not to re-sign Matt Prater. On their tenth try, they landed off Badgley in Week 7 of the 2022 season and he performed well, scoring 20 of 24 field goals and 33/33 of his run on tries. He also was four of four in his only game with the Bears earlier in the season.
“He knows exactly who he is,” Lions Special Teams Coordinator Dave Fipp said of Badgley last season. “He’s not trying to be someone else. He knows what his leg is. He always hits the same ball. He’s very consistent. And he’s comfortable with who he is and I think that gives him an advantage. So he was great to be around. I really enjoy the man.”
After the season ended, Badgley told POD’s Hamza Baccouche that he wanted to return to the Lions in 2023, noting that he enjoyed the team’s chemistry and was excited to be in Detroit.
While Badgley will be back at Allen Park this off-season, the Lions have shown they are always looking for competition at the position. It is possible that they look at the draft to select one of the best kickers in the class or they can try to land a kicker after the draft in the undrafted market. Of course, they can also look at another free agent.
Regardless of whether the Lions add competition or not, they successfully filled another gap in the roster during the free agency period, allowing them to remain flexible with their assets moving forward.
